A glimpse of the New Creation

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,
27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

The New International Version, Galatians 3:26–28.

I had the privilege of attending the Symposium on Worship at Calvin College/Calvin Seminary last week.  As a pastor, I signed up for a bunch of preaching seminars that were very encouraging, insightful and interesting.

The most striking thing to me, however, was the worship services I attended. Now at these services, there are, of course, very talented speakers, musicians, praise teams and choirs. There was even a mariachi band–very cool.  We sang songs in English, Spanish, and even Mandarin.  I was talking with a person from my church about language in the new creation, and she thought it might be like Star Trek, where we would all have a built-in universal language translator.  That wouldn’t surprise me at all.  Maybe, we will get to learn all the different languages.  That would be cool too.

Anyways, getting back to what struck me the most. It wasn’t the liturgies, that were fantastic and powerful. It was the unity in diversity of God’s people.  There were people of all colour worshiping together, praising God together, and focusing our attention on our Triune God.  There weren’t only male preachers, there were woman preachers too.  Both very capable of bringing the good news that “we are all children of God through faith.” There where also people from every nation (okay many nations) under heaven lifting up hearts and hands in worship of our shared, one and only God, who is so worthy to be praised.

Thank-You God for giving me yet another glimpse of how wonderful your new creation will be.

9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals, because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”

The New International Version, Revelation 5:9–10.
