Priceless, Protection, Party Time & Pleasure

With that title, you’d think it was some type of modern advertisement trying to get our attention, and then ultimately motivating us to make a purchase of some kind.

Well, as the first word in the title suggests, it’s not something we can buy — it’s priceless.  And, it never, ever fails.  It will never let us down.  It’s 100% reliable, 100% of the time.  What is it?

God’s unfailing love!

As part of my devotions this morning, I read Psalm 36 and I was struck by the stark contrast in this Psalm.  David first speaks about the sinfullness of the wicked.

2 In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin.

4 Even on their beds they plot evil;
they commit themselves to a sinful course
and do not reject what is wrong.

As I write this, there is a tsunami warning  for BC after a large earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska.  It’s another contraction for this old earth that is eagerly awaiting the birth of a child — a beautiful, tsunami free, new creation. A place where there will be no warning sirens telling us to go to higher ground.  We will be safe in our homes, and the waters will be calm and peaceful, respecting the boundaries God has established for them.

7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.

– The New International Version, Psalm 36:7–8.

These verses are quite the contrast to the tsunami path of the wicked, aren’t they?

PRICELESS!  That is our God’s unfailing love.

PROTECTION!  There is shelter from the tsunami and storm under his wings.

PARTY TIME! Prosperity even.  Prosperity has become a dirty word in Christian circles thanks to the prosperity preachers and their over realized eschatology. These health and wealth preachers aren’t wrong in that all of this stuff is still coming, they just think that they/we can have it all today.  They forget that we are still building for the Kingdom.  We are still getting our hands dirty planting seeds, watering, and harvesting.  We are still taking up our crosses and following Jesus by serving others and getting the good news out.

PLEASURE: Yes. We can certainly have foretastes of the eternal pleasures at God’s right hand (A safe home, good food and fun, intimacy and fellowship), and we can take sips from the river of His delights, but that only comes in fullness when this old earth gives birth to a new and beautiful and eternal one.

So as we work, as we build for the Kingdom in His strength and power, remember your destiny.  There is certainly nothing wrong with hoping and dreaming about this wonderful future destiny that awaits all those who have put their hope and trust in the finished work of JESUS CHRIST.  Protection, Party Time, and Pleasures are coming.  We even catch glimpses of them in the here and now.  As I write this, I’m in a relatively safe location, in a beautiful home, with a cup of extra large coffee at my right hand, It’s all thanks to the right hand of my Creator.

But wherever you are right now, whether it’s moving to higher ground because of an impending tsunami, or if you floating down a peaceful river on vacation, remember this:

God’s unfailing love is priceless! And he will be with you wherever you are, regardless of the situation.
